How safe is the outside of your loved one’s home? This is a good time of year to check the safety of outside your loved one’s house. The exterior of the home is just as important as the inside when it comes to keeping your loved one in a safe environment plus free from slips and falls. Walking around the outside of the home, checking for things on the ground, like a hose, that can be tripped on or landscaping issues like a tree branch that fell to the ground can avoid an emergency. Below are more ways to make the outside of the home safe:
Ways to Keep the Outside Safe
- Deal with landscaping issues like tree branches too close to the windows and dead plants/trees that could catch fire.
- Declutter the garage, remove any gas cans or old paint cans.
- Check all windows and doors to ensure the locks are working properly.
- Add deadbolts to exterior doors for extra safety.
- Install a security bar on the sliding glass door.
- Consider adding a security system or at the very least Ring and outdoor security lights with motion sensors in the front and back of the home.
- If the front door does not have a security door, install one for extra safety.
- Advise your loved one(s) to report suspicious activity in their neighborhood. Also not to answer the door, unless they are expecting a visitor.
Taking a few minutes to ensure that your loved one’s home is safe and adding extra safety precautions can make the difference in having an emergency or not.
Another way to ensure your loved one is safe at home is to have a caregiver visit your loved one 2 – 3 days a week, plus it is good to have a companion to keep them company.
