Although there is not a cure for diabetes, you can have control over your diabetes so that you live a full and healthy life.  In addition to treatment, you can self-manage your diabetes.  The most important component to managing your diabetes is keeping your blood sugar levels as close to normal as you can.  Diabetes self-management can help lower blood sugar levels and manage weight if you are overweight.

Taking control of your diabetes can change how you feel today and in the future.  When you keep your blood sugar close to normal you will experience:  more energy, heal easier, decrease infections, be less thirsty and feel less sluggish.

Plus, you will decrease your likelihood of having other health issues related to diabetes.  Some health-related issues are:

  • Stroke
  • Heart Attack
  • Nerve Damage
  • Kidney Damage
  • Eye Problems
  • Foot Damage
  • Skin Conditions
  • Gum Problems

Managing your diabetes can feel like a full-time job, but it doesn’t have to.  Keeping a routine and being prepared will make it easier to have a normal life.  Below are a few tips:

  • Use an appointment book, planner, or use your phone’s calendar to set up reminders for important times like checking your blood sugar, take medications, doctor appointment reminders, and even schedule time to exercise.  If you use a daily planner, then add sticky notes where you will see them as additional reminders.  Having a system in place will help you create a routine for diabetes care.
  • Stay organized, keep all of your supplies and medication in one place.  This will help you know when your medication or supplies are running low so you can reorder them.  Don’t wait to you are completely out of the items and medication that you need before you reorder more.
  • Don’t leave home without taking your supplies.  Make a diabetes kit with your supplies, plus put a snack in there and water.  You may also want to add hard candy or glucose tablets in case your sugar gets low while you are out.  Anytime you leave the house, grab your kit so you are always prepared.

It is very important to keep your diabetes under control.  Once you create a routine for yourself, managing your diabetes will not seem like a chore just a way of life.
