As you get older, you are more at risk of having heart problems like heart disease. Maintaining a healthy heart is important for any age, but for seniors it has to be a significant part of life. Here are a few ways to support a healthy heart:
- Eat Healthy. A consistent healthy diet is the first step to a healthy heart. The American Heart Association recommends eating nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat protein foods and fish. Avoid processed foods, unhealthy fats, and foods high in sodium.
- Exercise. Taking a 20-minute walk daily can make a difference. It does not have to be a vigorous workout routine to be impactful. Doing housework or gardening keeps you moving. Choose something you enjoy, like bowling, golfing, or swimming to keep you active.
- Maintain a Healthy Weight. Extra pounds can contribute to high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol.
- Stop Smoking. Smoking creates more damage to the artery walls. It is never too late to stop smoking and gain the benefits of quitting smoking like decreasing your risk of heart disease or a stroke.
With a few changes in your daily life, you can become less at risk of developing heart problems as you age. This can mean a longer, healthier life. It can be easier to make modifications to your diet and become more active with a family member or friend so you can provide support for each other.
Another option is having a caregiver who can make you healthy meals, drive you to the gym, or go for walks with you. You will be more motivated to stick to a healthy meal plan and to exercise when someone is encouraging the process.
