Ways for seniors to stay healthy.  For seniors, it can be difficult for the body to battle an illness and the recovery time, from an illness like the flu, can be drastically longer.  As you age, your immune system becomes weaker.

Immune System and Seniors

The immune system is your  protection against substances like bacteria and viruses. The immune system creates cells and antibodies that destroy these harmful substances.  As you become older, your immune system becomes slower to respond and this will increase your chances of getting sick.  In addition if you have another condition this can cause complications if you catch a cold or the flu.

Ways to Stay Healthy

Wash Hands Consistently.  We hear this constantly, especially with COVID and the flu season here.  There is a reason that everyone preaches to wash your hands; this is the best way to get rid of germs and reduce the spread of illness.  Our hands come in contact with so many surfaces on a daily basis that it is so important to constantly wash them.  This is especially true if you have been to a public place.  After you have been in a public place, immediately wash your hands.  If you are not near a bathroom to wash your hands, then use hand sanitizer.  As soon as you get home, wash your hands thoroughly.  It is a good idea to change into clean clothes, also once you get home.  You don’t have to be out in public to need to wash your hands, when you touch things like the mail, crossword puzzles, magazines, etc., you need to wash your hands.

Stay Away From People Who Are Sick.    If a family member or friend is sick, avoid seeing that person until they are completely better.  It can be difficult, especially when you want to visit with your family and friends, but your health needs to be a top priority.  There are virtual ways to visit with family or friends like using Skype, Facetime, or Zoom.

Eat Healthy Foods.   What you eat does matter when it comes to boosting your immune system.  You need to get the right amount of vitamins and nutrients into your diet.  Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean protein like chicken and fish, and eat whole grain foods.  Limit greasy, fried foods in your diet.

Exercise.  It is very important to include exercise into your daily routine.  This can be going for a 20 minute walk or taking a low impact aerobics class at a gym or at home.  Staying active stimulates your immune system to keep illness away.  It is great to go outside and get some fresh air when you are able to.
